INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M TALULA HAYES.
IN THE NEWS TODAY,
IN STATE NEWS,
State supreme court justice Annette Ziegler announces she will not seek reelection in 2027. Ziegler, a conservative who has served as a judge and justice for nearly 30 years, announced this just before voters will elect a new justice to replace Rebecca Bradley, also a conservative, this April. These elections come after the most expensive judicial race in US history, which surpassed 98 million dollars in spending and maintained the liberal majority within the court. Now, with Ziegler and Bradley’s departure, the Wisconsin GOP is attempting to regain those spots to keep the court from a 5-2 or even a possible 6-1 liberal majority. In a statement, Ziegler expressed her appreciation for voters and stated Quote, “I look forward to finishing out the rest of my term on the court and handing the baton to a new justice in 2027.” End Qoute.

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
Georgia voters are set to vote on Tuesday for a successor to House congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene. Months ago, Greene resigned from Congress following problems with President Trump. The top candidates for the election include Republicans Clay Fuller and Colton Moore, as well as Democrat Shawn Harris. An election runoff would occur if no candidate wins a majority of the votes across 10 counties. Fuller is a district attorney endorsed by Trump. He wants to avoid a runoff election in April in order to support Trump sooner. However, this may be unlikely, as 12 Republicans, three Democrats, a Libertarian and an independent are running. The winner would serve out the remaining months of Greene’s previous term and would need to run again to remain in Congress. Last week, 10 Republicans and Harris qualified for the November election’s full two-year term. A democrat is unlikely to win out the 14th northwest district of Georgia. This district has been rated the most Republican-leaning district in Georgia by the Cook Political Report.
ALSO IN NATIONAL NEWS,
Uber’s women-only drivers option is launched nationwide to address safety concerns. Women across the U.S. are able to be matched with other female drivers for trips. Currently, though, a class action lawsuit involving policy in California is still underway. They claim the preference option violated California’s Unruh Act, prohibiting sex discrimination in businesses. Uber drivers argued the option is discriminatory against men. Uber is pushing back, as drivers signed plaintiffs while joining the app to allow such features. Lyft, another ride-offering company, is also facing a similar lawsuit following its nationwide feature introduction in 2024. Passengers have the option to change drivers if the wait is too long and can set a preference to women drivers in the app. This is also allowed on teen accounts. Uber claims about one-fifth of its drivers in the U.S. are women.
IN INTERNATIONAL NEWS,
700,000 people are forced to flee Lebanon after Israeli airstrikes. Israel also continued bombing Iran where a resident said that the capital city of Tehran wouldn’t exist in 10 days if the strikes continue. The Pentagon also said on Tuesday that Iranian strikes have wounded 140 US soldiers. Israel is striking the Lebanese areas to try to weed out Hezbollah, an Iranian backed armed forces group. More than 667,000 people have registered on the Lebanese government’s online displacement platform. In a news briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump would be the only one who determines whether the conditions required to end the war are met. Trump previously said Iran must unconditionally surrender. The conflict has killed more than 1,800 people and seriously disrupted global energy markets. U.S. and Israeli strikes have killed about 1,300 people in Iran. Iranian attacks across the Middle East have killed at least 30. Israeli strikes have killed more than 500 people in Lebanon.
