IN THE NEWS TODAY,
IN STATE NEWS,
Beaver Dam residents express concerns about the Meta AI data center recently constructed. In the Juneau Community Center, a town hall meeting was held to let community members share their opinions. Many residents believe the large center was approved and built without public awareness. The original contract information was filed with redactions, raising frustration for residents about the lack of project transparency. This is common across Wisconsin, where communities are hosting large-scale projects without the full picture. Wisconsin currently houses around 47 to 52 operational data centers. They focus on AI development and are typically protested for their environmental impact. Data centers use a lot of energy, as well as use large amounts of water for equipment cooling. Health and safety impacts were addressed at the meeting too. The infrastructure and power lines being built near homes has led some to worry about stray voltage impacting families. Regardless of the pushback from the community, a second proposal for a data center construction in Beaver Dam is currently in the works. It is expected to be brought to the common council later this month.
IN NATIONAL NEWS,
17 states are suing the Trump administration about requirements regarding race data collection by colleges. The democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit against the requirement that higher education institutes must collect data to prove they aren’t considering race in admissions. This policy was ordered by Trump in August following concerns of racial considerations in personal admissions statements, which he believes is illegal discrimination. In 2023, the Supreme Court ruled against affirmative action in admissions. However, it said colleges can still consider how race shaped students’ lives if they provide that information in essays. Similar settlement agreements were met with Brown University and Columbia University. The government asked for data on race, GPA, and test scores in return for the restoration of federal research funding.
IN INTERNATIONAL NEWS,
U.S. strike that killed over 150 elementary school children likely due to outdated intelligence. On February 28th, the U.S. struck Shajareh Tayyiba school in Minab in an attempted strike on the Iranian military. The military was conducting strikes on a neighboring Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps facility. US Central Command created target coordinates for the strike using outdated information provided by the Defense Intelligence Agency according to sources. The central command and DIA both deferred comment to the Pentagon saying it is under investigation. President Trump said he didn’t know about it when asked today. Trump had previously asserted that Iran might be to blame for the strike, though when pressed on why no one in his own administration seemed to be publicly supporting that claim, he responded, “Because I just don’t know enough about it.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the U.S. has done everything it can to avoid civilians and claims Iran is not doing the same.

TURNING OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE
Bam Adebayo shocks the NBA and scores 83 points to move to 2nd all time in single game points. He is currently behind only Wilt Chamberlin’s famous 100 point game, passing Kobe Bryant’s 81 points in 2nd. The performance was more than Adebeyo’s previous career high and 2nd high combined where he scored 41 and 38. There have been 11 games this year in which a team fails to score 83 points in a game. He finished the night 20 for 43 from the floor and 36 for 43 from the charity stripe. He was 7 for 22 from beyond the arc. Some NBA players criticized the effort. When Kelly Oubre jr was asked he said Joel Embiid did it efficiently and he did it in three quarters. He is referring to Embiid scoring 70 points on 20 of 41 shooting. Giannis Antetokounmpo said, “Doesn’t matter how you get there. 30 years from now nobody's gonna remember how many free throws he shot. All you remember is 83”. The Bucks play the Heat tomorrow night and he joked, we are gonna do better than that. He’s only gonna score 82.
