INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M NATHAN JAHN.

IN THE NEWS TODAY,

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
40 airlines across the country to see 10% reductions in flight traffic due to government shutdown. Airports in New York, LA, Chicago, and Atlanta will be among those affected. The FAA said that it has to reduce air traffic due to the strain on air traffic controllers. The controllers have worked without pay for the last 36 days because of the shutdown. The FAA has already had to impose delays to major flights due to a lack of air traffic controllers. Airlines said that they will try to minimize the impact by getting rid of smaller regional flights. Passengers aboard flights that will be cancelled should be receiving notification beginning today. The government has moved farther from a resolution, with Democrats holding strong after their election victories. The White House is still pushing the message that Democrats have shut down the government. They are running a clock on whitehouse.gov that says the time it has been shut down and lists institutes that quote “don’t agree with democrats actions”.

IN INTERNATIONAL NEWS,
Sudanese paramilitary forces (RSF) agreed to a humanitarian ceasefire negotiated by the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. The official Sudanese government has not responded at this time; however, Mohamed Osman Akasha, Kenyan ambassador to Sudan spoke to the BBC yesterday and said “I have no information about a proposal for truce. The only thing that I know is the government of Sudan, the people of Sudan are very determined to defeat this militia”. These developments come shortly after the RSF seized the city of el-Fasher after an 18 month siege. It also comes at a tipping point for domestic aid kitchens, with many estimated to close within 6 months due to a lack of supplies. The UN estimates that 24 million people are facing ‘acute food shortages’ in the country. The UN's Human Rights Council said it would hold an urgent session on the situation in el-Fasher on 14 November.

Earlier today, Nancy Pelosi announced her decision not to run for reelection to the US House, marking the end of the first and only female speaker of the US House of Representatives. After being elected to Congress in 1987, Pelosi will have served 39 years as the representative of San Francisco in Congress before she leaves office. Since she was elected to be the speaker for the House in 2007, Pelosi helped pass landmark legislation into law, such as the Affordable Care Act and the repeal of the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy against LGBTQ service members. As California's redistricting leader, Pelosi played a crucial role in Prop 50 and the party's comeback in this month's election.

In a video released by Pelosi, she said: "My message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power. We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way. And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear."

TURNING OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE
Dallas Cowboys Defensive End Marshawn Kneeland died overnight. Kneeland was 24 years old in his second NFL season. Kneeland died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Frisco police attempted to pull over Kneeland for a traffic stop, but he refused to stop. Police then lost sight of the vehicle before finding it crashed and abandoned. Kneeland fled the vehicle on foot and then took his own life. On Monday night, Kneeland recovered a blocked punt in the end-zone for a touchdown in the Cowboys game against the Cardinals. Kneeland had a promising rookie season before he was sidelined with a knee injury. Kneeland had apparently expressed suicidal thoughts before. The Cowboys released a written statement saying “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
