IN LOCAL NEWS,
Verona announces that a teacher was fired after a conduct review regarding one of her students. Halla Nelson was a band teacher for the school district but was arrested on September 4th after an investigation into her conduct in 2019. According to a criminal complaint Nelson had exchanged over 1000 messages with her student. Nelson was a choir teacher at Badger Ridge Middle School and Core Knowledge Charter School. Messages show the two of them started talking on May 29, 2019, and ended on Nov. 30, 2020. Detectives said in the complaint they reviewed multiple Discord messages, including sexually explicit chats that refer to Nelson by name and to the teen not yet being of legal age. Nelson was placed on leave on Aug. 31 by the district.

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
Open AI has flagged six reports of “unexpected or concerning” behavior in AI models. On Wednesday, they claimed they are introducing a new framework to help track and disclose instances of “misalignment”. These incidents are cases where the AI models acted without authorization, coordinated with other models, or evaded oversight. This announcement came as leaders of OpenAI and Anthropic are calling for a slowdown in technology. In one of the cases, an unreleased AI research model created “jailbreak-like” instructions within its own notes in order to free itself from normal constraints. It told itself to be quote “freed from the roles and identities that bind other chatbots,” end quote. In other instances, an AI agent used computer code to answer a question and uploaded the file publicly without the user’s permission. These reports and others which are similar were all found over the past few months. These new reports are following cases in July where a rogue AI system hacked into the AI startup Hugging Face. Furthermore, Anthropic said that same month that its AI models hacked into three organizations during their testing.

The use of the untested ‘Wolverine’ peptide backed by RFK Jr. is on the rise. This peptide has been marketed online for pain, healing and performance enhancement. However, there is little evidence of its safety. The peptide is BPC-157 and has not been approved for use in the U.S. Social media posts have claimed its benefit is for muscle growth and injury recovery, which is boosting its sales, however it is not backed by scientific testing. In July, a panel of U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisers voted to allow pharmacy compounding of this peptide, furthered by RFK Jr.’s backing. The FDA has not yet issued its decision on whether to allow the compounding. The number of confirmed users has increased 33-fold between 2020 and 2026.

PASSING IT OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE
Steve Belichick resigns as Defensive Coordinator of the University of North Carolina. The resignation comes amidst an internal investigation into the football program’s culture. UNC said in a statement that the investigation "determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina's values and standards of conduct." According to sources with direct knowledge of the proceedings, the investigation was wide-ranging in scope and included questions about sex between female staff and players as well as drug use within the program. UNC did not provide specific findings of its investigation, nor did it specifically connect Steve Belichick, 39, or former general manager Michael Lombardi, who resigned earlier this month, to the investigation despite mentioning both in Thursday's statement.
